Let us take a read at some fun facts you probably didn’t know about this jolly holiday!

  1. The world’s tallest Christmas tree stood at 221ft and was decorated & displayed in the Northgate shopping center in Seattle, Washington in 1950.  
  1. The classic Christmas song ‘Jingle Bells’ was the first song played in space. Imagine that! According to the Guinness World Records, it was played on 16thDecember 1965 during the NASA Gemini 6A Flight.
  1. Germany is credited for starting the tradition of the Christmas trees. History.com shares that in the 16thcentury, Christians in Germany brought the trees into their homes and decorated them for the holiday.
  1. Shocking fact, Rudolph was a marketing gimmick! Rudolph was the created by Robert L. May’s in 1939. He wrote and publicised a poem using Rudolph to entice customers into a department store.
  1. Santa Claus has many different names. He is called Père Noël (France), Papa or Papai Noel (Spain and Portuguse respectively), Weihnachtsmann (German), Babbo Natale (Italian) and many others.

  2. In Japan, Christmas is seen more as a romantic day than a religious holiday. It is common to see couples having a romantic outing and singles out and about hoping to meet a partner. For families, it is popular to eat a particular brand of fried chicken together. This started due to a marketing campaign in 1974 that grew to become a national tradition.

  3. In China, only 1% of the population celebrates Christmas. On Christmas Eve, it has become a custom to give apples to friends and loved ones. Christmas Eve is called “Ping’an Ye” which also translates to peace or quiet. Apple in Mandarin is “píngguǒ” which sounds very similar to the word peace.
