International Tea Day has become an important day for tea growing nations. What started off as a celebration among five nations has grown to become a international event recognised by the United Nations, with countries such as India and China participating.
Since tea was first discovered in China nearly 5,000 years ago, it has grown to be the second most consumed beverage, after water. With an estimated global market value of $49.7 billion, the production as well as the consumption of tea affects millions of people’s livelihoods.
International Tea Day also acts as a platform to raise issues pertaining to sustainable production and consumption of tea as well as addressing real world issues affecting developing tea growing nations such as poverty and climate change.
BOH as a tea producer is focused on our sustainable efforts in our tea production, from the processing stage right up to the packaging material we use. We believe that it is important to lower our wastage, especially plastic, and we are actively looking for methods we can repurpose or recycle our products safely.
International Tea Day, is an important reminder for us, as well as other tea producers on the impact the tea industry has on stakeholders and the environment. As tea continues to be a growing commodity, it is important to continue efforts to produce tea sustainably and embrace the changing trends of tea drinkers around the world.
